Sleeping Bags
Sleeping bag designs for outdoor survival for both professionals and civilians today are very high tech, sometimes the only difference between the two being the colour!
This is actually not a trivial factor...Do you want to be found? In which case a bright colour will be useful for attracting attention when your sleeping stuff is airing in that (sunny-hopefully) clearing, or do you not want to be found? When the obvious choice is going to be camo, olive, khaki etc.
We recommend Snugpak, Fox and Carinthia and who all manufacture an excellent range of high quality sleeping bags that you can rely on to suit every climate and situ.
A sleeping bag is every outdoors sleeper's best friend. Even in many warmer climates the temperature drops at night, this is especially true in the desert where after an unbearably scorching day the night time temperatures can drop to 0°C. Most people find adjusting to changes in temperature quite a challenge and only a few degrees makes a lot of difference and the comfort range is different for women and men, men usually being more cold tolerant.
In the design of sleeping bags, insulation (the prevention of heat loss) is paramount and various thermal materials are used to retain the heat the body gives off and stop it escaping.
Feather down renowned for its insulating properties and being '' as light as a few hundred feathers'' (well when dry anyway) is still used as thermal sleeping bag filler and this maybe the better choice for those who prefer a natural material... Carinthia sleeping bags still incorporate down into some of their designs and we would recommend a waterproof liner with these.
Specially designed synthetic material is the other option generally lighter in weight, they are useful in the damp humid climates of the subtropics and jungle being easier to dry out and are also weather resistant and often waterproof.
Innovative two-in-one designs, that can be transformed from 3 season to all season sleeping bags by way of a removable inner shell, can be found within the Snugpak range and also Fox; with their Fox Ven Tec ® All Season bag and their, new for 2012, Fox Ven Tec® Lite. The Carinthias MCSS also serves brilliantly to the same effect.
